Variability of ultraluminous X-ray sources in the Cartwheel Ring

چکیده
The Cartwheel is one of the most outstanding examples of a dynamically perturbed galaxy where star formation is occurring inside the ring–like structure. In previous studies with Chandra, we detected 16 Ultra Luminous X-ray sources lying along the southern portion of the ring. Their Luminosity Function is consistent with them being in the high luminosity tail of the High Mass X-ray Binaries distribution, but with one exception: source N.10. This source, detected with Chandra at LX = 1 × 10 erg s, is among the brightest non–nuclear sources ever seen in external galaxies. Recently, we have observed the Cartwheel with XMM-Newton in two epochs, six months apart. After having been at its brightest for at least 4 years, the source has dimmed by at least a factor of two between the two observations. This fact implies that the source is compact in nature. Given its extreme isotropic luminosity, there is the possibility that the source hosts an accreting intermediate–mass black hole. Other sources in the ring vary in flux between the different datasets. We discuss our findings in the context of ULX models.

Intermediate-mass black holes and ultraluminous X-ray sources in the Cartwheel ring galaxy
Chandra and XMM−Newton observations of the Cartwheel galaxy show∼ 17 bright X-ray sources ( > ∼ 5× 10 38 erg s), all within the gas-rich outer ring. We explore the hypothesis that these X-ray sources are powered by intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) accreting gas or undergoing mass transfer from a stellar companion. To this purpose, we run N -body/SPH simulations of the galaxy interaction wh...

We report the Chandra/ACIS-S detection of more than 20 ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs, L0.5−10keV > ∼3 × 10 ergs s) in the Cartwheel collisional ring galaxy system, of which over a dozen are located in the outer active star-forming ring. A remarkable hyperluminous X-ray source (HLX, L0.5−10keV > ∼10 ergs s assuming isotropic radiation), which dominates the X-ray emission from the Cartwheel r...
متن کاملUltraluminous X–ray Sources and Star Formation
Chandra observations of the Cartwheel galaxy reveal a population of ultraluminous X–ray sources (ULXs) with lifetimes <∼ 10 7 yr associated with a spreading wave of star formation which began some 3 × 10 yr ago. A population of high–mass X–ray binaries provides a simple model: donor stars of initial masses M2 >∼ 15M⊙ transfer mass on their thermal timescales to black holes of masses M1 >∼ 10M⊙....
متن کاملLow metallicity and ultra-luminous X-ray sources in the Cartwheel galaxy
Low-metallicity (Z < ∼ 0.05Z⊙) massive ( > ∼ 40M⊙) stars might end their life by directly collapsing into massive black holes (BHs, 30 < ∼ mBH/M⊙ < ∼ 80). More than ∼ 10 massive BHs might have been generated via this mechanism in the metal-poor ring galaxy Cartwheel, during the last ∼ 10 yr. We show that such BHs might power most of the ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs) observed in the Cartwh...
متن کاملA thorough study of the intriguing X - ray emission from the Cartwheel ring
the date of receipt and acceptance should be inserted later Abstract. We present the results from the high resolution Chandra observation of the Cartwheel galaxy. Many individual sources are resolved in the image, mostly associated with the outer ring. All detected sources have a very high X-ray luminosity (≥ 10 39 erg s −1) that classifies them as Ultra Luminous X-ray sources (ULX). The bright...
